A UX transformation that turned complexity into confidence for thousands of new users.

Introduction

Established in 2007, Phongsavanh Bank holds the distinction of being Laos' first private commercial bank. Built on a foundation of trust, accessibility, and economic progress, the bank has consistently played a key role in shaping the financial future of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

In its ambitious stride toward digitisation, Phongsavanh Bank set out to transform its mobile banking platform—Hi—into a user-centric, intuitive app that could cater to both tech-savvy users and first-time digital adopters. The goal was not merely to redesign an app but to redefine how Laotians interact with money, in a country where cash is still king.

Through a comprehensive UX overhaul, our team sought to bridge the gap between modern financial technology and a traditionally cash-reliant user base. The result? A smarter, simpler, and more inclusive digital banking experience, tailored to Laos’ unique needs.

Context

Laos, a landlocked Southeast Asian country with a population of around 7 million, presents a unique set of challenges for digital adoption. Despite a growing mobile subscriber base (with over 90% of the population owning a mobile phone), digital banking is still in its infancy.

Key contextual factors we considered:
  • Low ICT literacy

  • Unbanked majority

  • Multi-currency dependency

The combination of low digital familiarity, cash dependence, and multi-currency complexity set the stage for an ambitious design challenge that required a highly localised, human-centered solution.

Challenges

The project presented several critical challenges that needed to be addressed in order to ensure the success and adoption of the new Hi app

Research & Insights

To develop a truly user-centered design, we began with deep immersion into the real-world behaviors, motivations, and constraints of our diverse user base.

The redesigned Hi app was built with a deep understanding of Laos’ unique user needs, economic behavior, and technical constraints. Every feature was crafted to balance simplicity, performance, and trust—with the goal of making banking accessible for everyone, from first-time digital users to experienced mobile wallet customers.

1. Multi-Currency Wallet Support
  • Seamlessly handled transactions in Lao Kip (LAK), Thai Baht (THB), and US Dollar (USD)

  • Real-time exchange rates with color-coded currency indicators

  • One-swipe carousel interface to switch between currencies and view balances instantly

  • Reduced cognitive load by presenting foreign exchange in a familiar, easy-to-understand format

2. QR Code Payments
  • Instant payments via QR codes, accepted across a growing network of merchants and vendors

  • Clear scan-and-confirm flow to build confidence in cashless transactions

  • Especially useful for daily purchases like groceries, fuel, and transport

3. Biometric Authentication
  • Enabled secure logins using fingerprint and facial recognition

  • Reduced password fatigue and login drop-offs

  • Built user trust through familiarity with mobile unlocking behavior

4. Guided Onboarding & Contextual Learning
  • Step-by-step registration with simplified KYC flow

  • Short, language-localized in-app tutorial videos to help new users learn how to transact

  • Micro-interactions and tooltips to guide users in real time, reducing the learning curve

5. Intuitive UI & Localized UX
  • Visually refined interface using colors, symbols, and patterns inspired by Laotian cultural motifs

  • High contrast, large touch targets, and readable Lao fonts to ensure accessibility

  • Consistent iconography and navigation patterns to reduce confusion and support faster onboarding

6. Lightweight, Low-Bandwidth Design
  • Optimized for low-end Android devices and patchy internet connectivity

  • Offline caching of essential content like balances, transaction history, and tutorials

  • Placeholder skeleton screens and reassuring micro-copy reduced anxiety during delays

7. Built-In Currency Converter
  • Integrated conversion calculator with side-by-side rate comparisons

  • Enabled users to preview charges, conversions, and totals before proceeding

  • Increased transparency and minimized user errors during cross-currency transaction

Conclusion

This project was more than just a redesign. It was a systemic step toward financial inclusion in an emerging economy. By deeply understanding user needs, constraints, and aspirations, we were able to create an experience that is not only functional and accessible, but also emotionally intuitive.

As Phongsavanh Bank continues its journey toward a fully digital ecosystem, the Hi app lays the groundwork for broader financial transformation—not just within the bank, but across Laos.

Next Steps: The roadmap includes QR-code payments, biometric login, and offline P2P transfers, all aiming to bring seamless banking to even the most remote villages.

Problem Statement

Phongsavanh Bank needed to bring digital banking to thousands of first-time users in Laos, many unfamiliar with financial apps. Existing flows assumed prior literacy, leading to confusion and low trust. The challenge: make digital banking simple enough for anyone to use confidently.

Solution

I simplified onboarding, KYC, and transactions into short, guided steps with clear feedback and plain language. Visual cues and transparent summaries built trust at every stage, turning first-time uncertainty into everyday confidence.
